Boiled water notice was a precaution
After eight years, three pharmacies in Mitchelstown are putting an end to the Sunday pharmacy service with heavy hearts, due to a decline in the need for the service over recent years.
The service is run by Doody’s, Fitzgibbon’s and Murphy’s Abbey Pharmacies and the three family-owned pharmacies say that the need for their Sunday service has declined, due to Southdoc being based in Fermoy where a pharmacy is available. It will finish this Sunday, April 28 and customers can contact their own pharmacy for out of hours service.
One of the pharmacists, who spoke to The Avondhu, explained that when Southdoc was based in Mitchelstown on a rota, there was a need for the pharmacies to provide a local dispensary service on Sundays, but now with Southdoc based in Fermoy, the need for the service has been steadily declining.
The pharmacist explained that some weeks they would only get one or two prescriptions on a Sunday, and of those, very few are urgent, but he stressed that the end of the official Sunday service does not mean that patients will be left without critical medication if they need it, as the three pharmacies are willing to provide out of hours services when required. He said that he is confident that patients will not be adversely affected by the end of this service.
He added that the decision was not taken lightly after eight years, but that if the need arose again, the pharmacies would reconsider it.
