A Mitchelstown native who was part of the late Albert Reynolds’ security detail, stayed overnight with the former Taoiseach’s coffin before his funeral this week.

Garda Donie Hanrahan, originally from Corracunna in Mitchelstown and now living in Kildare, was part of Mr Reynolds’ security detail for 18 years, from 1992 to 2011, before the Government removed the entitlement three years ago. Mr Hanrahan first joined the an Garda Siochana in Donnybrook in Dublin in 1978.

He described working for Mr Reynolds as ‘a privilege’.

“I was with him all his time, when he was in ‘Hazeldene’ (on Anglesea Road), then they moved to Ailesbury Road and then they moved to the Four Seasons Hotel.”

Last weekend, Mr Hanrahan stayed overnight with the coffin in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Dublin 4, prior to the funeral Mass and burial which took place on Monday.

Recalling the late Taoiseach, he said: “It was a privilege to do it, and he was a privilege to work for. And many a ticket he got me for an All-Ireland final, and you’d be getting two of them and they’d always be smiles,” he added warmly.
