Dear Sirs

Whatever side of the controversy people are on regarding the location of the Mitchelstown Leisure Centre, you have to give praise where praise is due. News that the Leisure Centre Group with the support of Ballyhoura have secured €500K funding from the Department of the Environment for the town’s long awaited Leisure Centre is welcome news indeed. A lot of hard work goes into any community project most of which remains unseen and unannounced. A project of this size and controversy demands even more and the praise is therefore all the more deserving.

It is unfortunate that the Community Council decided to not let the people of Mitchelstown have the final say on the location issue by holding a plebiscite. That decision was highly undemocratic and wrong in my opinion. Whether people agree or disagree over the best location, the committee have stuck to their guns and their hard work and dedication now appears to be bearing fruit. Let’s hope that the sod will indeed be turned on the project in June and that everyone can get behind the project to help it on its way to a speedy and successful completion.
