Works to upgrade the Mitchelstown Waste Water Treatment Plant is expected to commence in the second half of 2020 with completion estimated by the end of 2021.

However, one local councillor believes that Mitchelstown could lose out on major housing developments because the town is being put ‘on-hold’ by Irish Water.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn said he couldn’t understand why the work will take so long when a full scope of works has been agreed and the design for the project is all but complete.

“Why is it taking so long? I am afraid that Mitchelstown will lose out. I think the current situation is frightening off developers and builders from even looking at Mitchelstown. It’s not good enough …”
