The past week was a bitter sweet one for young Mitchelstown boxer Vladimir Belujsky, as he narrowly missed out on the opportunity to fight at the Olympic Games in Rio, but he was ranked as the number one elite fighter in Slovakia.
Originally from Slovakia, Vladimir had hoped to fight in Azerbaijan in the final Olympic boxing qualifier, but unfortunately received news that it would be too late for him to be entered and so now, all hopes of Rio are gone. However, the boxer said that this has just made him more determined than ever to make the next Olympic Games.
“Even though it’s very disappointing, it made me even more determined to make the next Olympic Games and I will do everything to make sure that it will happen,” he told The Avondhu.
Last Saturday, Vladimir boxed in Slovakia on the undercard of a professional European title fight against the Slovakian elite middleweight champion and he won, handing the Slovakian his second loss in 62 fights.
“I trained for this fight for nine weeks, three times a day, six days a week and it all paid off on Saturday night. I won all three rounds to become the number one ranked elite fighter in Slovakia,” Vladimir told The Avondhu.
The young boxer will now be focusing on the College and University World Championships in Thailand in October, where he is hoping to win a medal.
He thanked his family, friends, sponsors and everyone who has supported him and helped him to prepare for his fights and also The Avondhu for their continued support.
