A Mitchelstown man who took up art as a hobby, has been making quite an impact with his recent exhibition in Calabria in southern Italy. Thomas Murphy, now in his late 40s, is a son of Jimmy and Mary Murphy of Ballinamona and has been living in Italy for the past ten years or so.

Thomas moved to England in his late teens and worked for close on 20 years in maintenance and landscaping at Heathrow Airport with his brother Hugh. While there he met his Italian wife and hence, the move to Italy.

His paintings are very contemporary and his work has been very well received. Thomas intends coming home in March for a spell and doesn't rule out the possibility of staging an exhibition or two in Ireland in the future.

Thomas is the second eldest of five, his siblings being Marie, Leish, Hugh and James. He was delighted to have sold a couple of paintings from the exhibition which was held in the city of Cosenza while at the same time, making a lot of valuble contacts.
