The new Mitchelstown Leisure Centre will be officially opened on Thursday, May 14 by Michael Ring, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

This was confirmed to The Avondhu on Tuesday by Ben Lynch, chairman of the leisure centre committee.

"Minister Ring has direct responsibility for sport and has taken an interest in our community project for some time and has approved grants under the Sports Capital Programme on two occasions already. He was delighted to accept an invitation to formally open the complex and see for himself how the grant aid has been utilised," said Ben, who added, "We’re very confident that he’ll be impressed with what has been achieved to date, but we’re also going to take the opportunity to give him an outline of what we hope to achieve in the future."

Mitchelstown Leisure Centre continues to go from strength to strength. Manager Kristine Meenaghan is already looking ahead and is finalising plans for a series of innovative summer camps to run in July and into August.

"There is a huge amount of activity going on all the time but we’re very keen to hear from groups or parents if they feel we can expand those activities in the months ahead."

All members of the public are welcome to attend the official opening. It starts at 6.30pm next Thursday, May 14, Ben Lynch confirmed.
