The programme for the Tallow Tóstal has now been drawn up - and it's a comprehensive one. Central to the festival, whic is to be held over the June bank holiday weekend, are events to honour a local man who left the area many years ago for New York and has been a great benefactor to his native place in the years since, as well as to legions of people from the area who travelled to the US to work.

Saturday has been deemed 'Michael Prendergast Day' when the school road will be renamed in his honour, followed by a social night in the community hall. Music for the evening will be by the Pete Rivers Band and other special guests.

LAUNCH

The festival, which is a Gathering event, will be launched on Thursday, May 30th at 8pm with a heritage evening in the Arch ballroom (Tallow Community Centre.) Julian Watson and the heritage committee will display items relating to Tallow's rich heritage to commemorate the town's 400th anniversary. A translated copy of the town Charter will be presented by the Cantillon family to the Heritage Committee. There will also be a display from the town's Boccia Club, representing the physically challenged in the community.

Friday evening, May 31st will see the senior hurling Sergeant Cup game for the Mike Prendergast trophy, with Tallow taking on De La Salle. That'll be followed by music and finger food in The Corner House Bar. A tea dance will take place from 9pm in the Arch Ballroom, with music by Dave Rea.

The first of Saturday's events is the launch of the farmers' market in the newly opened car park. It's hoped to continue with the market each week thereafter. A coffee morning will be held from 10am to 1pm in St. Patrick's Hall for Tallow Foroige Club and the Youth Cafe. This is an opportunity for people to see the facilities. While a car boot sale will be held in the car park.

A historical walking tour of Tallow is planned for the afternoon, from 3 to 6pm. People can meet King James I and hear stories of Tallow. The meeting place for the tour is the town square. A soccer match featuring the under 30s against the over 30s will take place in Brideview Park for the Jolly Tinker Cup between 6 and 8pm, to be followed by the social in honour of Michael Prendergast, as outlined previously.

A traditional folk style Mass will begin Sunday's events. There'll be busking on the street in the afternoon, from 3.30pm. It will be adjudicated with some good prizes on offer. There will be live outdoor music on stage by Tony Dunne and the Butterfly Band, with Irish dancing and other craic also planned.

An event organised for Monday afternoon from 3.30pm and billed 'The Scattering' is designed as a family fun day with a barbecue at Clancy's Bar. Music will be featured, there'll be face painting, games, a teddy bears' picnic with surprises for all those who bring their teddy bears along. A fundraising draw will take place at that event.

FAMILY FRIENDLY PROGRAMME

"The programme for the weekend has been designed to offer a mixture of heritage events and fun activities for all the family. We want to make it an enjoyable and memorable event. We encourage everyone to invite their relatives and friends home to Tallow for our Gathering," chairman of the organising committee, John Pratt said.

The festival has been chosen as Waterford's entrant in the 2013 Pride of Place Tourism Diaspora Category.
