Ballinvreena recently played host to the Ballyhoura Historic Graveyard survey project exhibition, held on May 1st. The exhibition was attended by 130 people from all corners of the region.

In total, 70 historic graveyards have been digitally surveyed, recorded and transcribed onto www.historicgraves.com. This is searchable by family name and is a free tool in finding your ancestors’ burial place. The work has been viewed by thousands of people from across the world already and is still being populated with more data on a weekly basis.

Over 200 volunteers have given their time over the last 12 months to work on this project and the evening on May 1st was in recognition of that support. 10 volunteers spoke about the stories they uncovered as they surveyed the graveyards, including Conor O’Brien from Kilbehenny and John Sherlock, Ballygiblin, who shared stories on the graveyards at Kilbehenny and Kilgullane.
