The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine announced to the Dáil on Thursday, 30 April, that six clusters of Covid-19 cases had been confirmed in meat processing and deboning plants in Ireland.
This admission followed a line of questioning from Sinn Féin TD, Brian Stanley who, that Thursday evening, revealed that Rosderra Meats’ factories in Edenderry and Roscrea had logged significant numbers of Covid-19 among staff in their plants.
Referring specifically to the factory in Roscrea, the Deputy noted: “There are approximately 350 workers on the factory floor there. Up to 140 of them were out sick throughout last week and 120 tested positive for the virus.”
The Avondhu contacted Kepak in Watergrasshill and ABP Food Group, Cahir and queried whether any cases of Covid-19 had been recorded among staff, what actions had been taken, and whether measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 were in place in their facilities, including adequate social distancing, hand-washing and PPE.
