Mass on the Galtees

Fr Tom Breen in Ballylanders informs the Avondhu that, weather permitting, Mass will be celebrated on the Galtees this Saturday, June 13th. The plan is to leave from the King’s Yard outside Kilbehenny at 10am, the route from the main road is very well signposted and make for the summit. Regular climbers leave at 10.30am.

“In the Mass we’ll honour all the people who lived on the mountain in huts and poverty after being driven up by the Cromwellian forces in 1649. In 1877 journalist William O'Brien did a tour of some 517 tenants on the Buckley estate. His report in the Homes of Tipperary makes for chilling reading. We also want to honour the people who built the 4km Galtee wall as well as those who built and used the booley huts that acted as shelters for the sheep farmers. There are still famine ridges up there. We will also remember the three men who lost their lives in the plane crash in 1976 and the people who took care of the cross over the years.”

The Mass will be celebrated at noon at the white Cross at the top of the mountain and all are invited to attend. Those taking part in the walk are asked to wear strong footwear, appropriate clothing and bring refreshments for the mountain top including water. The climb is only suitable for those in good health and with a reasonable level of fitness.

“Hopefully the sun will shine and all those present will be able to see how beautiful, timeless and historic the Galtees are. Last year it was not safe to make the full climb. We had to settle for a low level walk and celebrate Mass in King's Yard. This year conditions are looking much better, so see you on the summit.”
