Positive tone as 2015 is rung in
A superb concert featuring three exciting acts, is booked in for The Village ARts Centre, Kilworth for Sunday night, February 8. This will be a night of traditional, folk and Bluegrass music to stir your heart and will feature Dan O'Sullivan from West Cork, Pat and Ricky Kelleher from Dripsey and a near neighbour of theirs - Maggie McCarthy - a hugely talented young lady who has performed for no less than Barack O'Bama at The White House.
For Dan, and indeed Pat and Ricky also, the Kilworth stage has a great attraction, having played the Kilworth venue on a number of occasions as solo performers but also together 18 or so months ago in what was a very entertaining tribute to The Clancy Bros and Tommy Makem.
The ide for this concert is that Dan will perform as a solo artiste as will Maggie McCarthy while Pat and Ricky, who have been building quite a reputation as a father and son duo, will perform in that mould. The highlight of course will be when the four musicians join forces to close the concert.
DAN O'SULLIVAN
Dan was born and reared in the lovely West Cork and grew up listening to songs and music on the old ‘78’s being played on the gramophone and then in the mid 60’s listening to all the folk music on the wireless on Radio Eireann. Both his fparents were singers and musicians who played at parish dances 'and beyond'.
"Then in the mid 1970’s, I saw the great duo Makem & Clancy perform on the television. They just blew me away. This was the spark that lit the flame for me and I quickly bought a guitar and learned a few chords and never looked back," Dan explains.
In the early 1980s, Dan was part of the folk group Crúiscín Lán. He pursued a solo career in the early ‘90s and in 1994, recorded an Album and accompanying video called 'A Dream Comes True'.
"Having being friends with Pat Kelleher during the years, we eventually teamed up for different gigs and sessions and in 2001 recorded a duo CD album called 'Take The High Road Together' and later recorded a live album 'Tribute to The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem - Live at The Village Arts Centre'. His second solo album, 'Most Requested' was very well received. He has toured in Ireland, U.K., Germany & the U.S. and continues to entertain, especially in Kerry during the summer season.
PAT & RICKY
Pat Kelleher is a well known Irish folk singer and has performed all over Ireland, in the UK, the U.S. and Germany for over 30 years. He plays 5 string banjo and guitar and has many CD albums to his credit as well as being a sought after recording session musician. He plays guitar and is a much requested session musician on clawhamme rbanjo.
His son Ricky, now just 17 years old, often teams up with his father and they play many genres in harmony at pub gigs, festivals and supporting many visiting acts at concerts. Ricky is an accomplished guitarist and also plays double bass, electric bass and drums and is currently pursuing learning the 5 string banjo. He has been singing and performing in public since he was 4 years old and has been teaching guitar since he was 13 years old.
Pat and Ricky have released a duo album 'All Mixed Up' in 2012 and is well received by the critics and has got positive reviews since its release.
MAGGIE McCARTHY
Maggie McCarthy is a world class musician and dancer. She has performed and toured with 'Rhythm Of The Dance' in Germany, Holland, Portugal, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, France, Finland Spain, Austria and extensively in The U.S. She spent a 6 weeks performing at Dolly Partons 'Dollywood' to over 200,00 people and appeared on several TV stations. She also performed for Barack Obama at the White House. She continues to perform and also teaches music and dancing. Her main instrument is the fiddle playing traditional Irish music and other genres equally well and is a world renowned Irish dancer.
Maggie has graced the Kilworth stage on one occasion before and her performance was greeted with spontaneous applause and calls for 'more'.
