A truck, which overturned on the approach to MacCurtain Street in Fermoy could have led to a very different story if it happened just half an hour later when the footpaths would have been filled with children making their way to school.
The incident occurred just after 8am on June 5 when a truck carrying building rubble overturned very close to two primary schools, Bishop Murphy Memorial School and Gaelscoil de hIde.
The Principal of Bishop Murphy Memorial School, James O'Donoghue said that a lot of children would have been making their way to school from 8.40am and the area where the truck overturned would have had children walking up and down and also cars parked there.
"A shiver ran through my body when I saw what happened," he said, adding that it's terrifying to think what might have happened if the incident happened a little bit later.
"We were very lucky that no one was hurt. A few of the students saw it and said 'Oh my God, what if', but we are just thankful that everyone is safe and sound."
He added that he was under the impression that the bypass was there for trucks to use and it would be his preference that they would do so to avoid another incident like this in the future.
The Revive Fermoy group have been highlighting the danger of HGV's coming through the town for the past few years and they believe that there needs to be a reduction in the 'unnecessary, dangerous and socially destructive traffic volumes going through the town'.
In light of last week's incident, they are now contacting all concerned parties and hope to arrange a public meeting which the newly elected councillors would be invited to find a solution to trucks and HGV's coming through the town.
"The group had surveyed HGV volumes in the town during late 2012 and concluded that accidents like these are inevitable and will happen from time to time and may cause loss of life.
"Sheer luck saved lives this time. With the volume of traffic - particularly HGV traffic - going through Fermoy the mathematics alone dictate that accidents will happen," Cian O'Meara of Revive Fermoy said.
