Following a request by locals living in the Watergrasshill area and subsequently from The Avondhu, Irish Water have this week come forward with answers in relation to the natural spring water supply at Meenane which the residents claimed ‘was not being maintained’.
One of the residents whose water is coming from that supply, has told The Avondhu that 50% of the water is being lost due to a leak which has been ‘ongoing’ for the last two years.
“The truth is that the caission used to secure the spring is leaking with the last two years leading to a reduced throughput of water and has not been investigated by Irish Water. This reduced throughput has contributed to the elevated level of cryptospiridium during low water level in August,” he explained.
