Fermoy Municipal District is set to receive €625,000 over the next five years as part of the Town Development Fund from Cork County Council.
The three towns in the district will share the allocation, with Fermoy – as a former town council – receiving €265,000, Mitchelstown receiving €185,000 and a further €175,000 being provided for Charleville.
The scope of the Town Development Fund will focus on three areas with each town; enhancements to public realm, support to business/partnership structures, and painting schemes.
In 2015, the allocation is €125,000, with that figure being broken down to €80,000 for Fermoy, €20,000 for Mitchelstown, and €25,000 for Charleville.
Speaking at the February meeting of Fermoy Municipal District, Pauline Moriarty said Fermoy is being given preference in 2015 in light of the recent flood relief works.
Of the €80,000 to be spent in Fermoy this year, €30K will be spent on supporting local retail, business and commerce associations, with €20,000 of that earmarked for a canopy of the bandstand in the Town Park.
In Mitchelstown, a spend of €15,000 has been proposed for a tree planting scheme along Lower Cork Street. Mr O’Gorman, fielding concerns about the cost of such a scheme from councillors, said they would be decorative, mostly lime trees and they won’t grow overly high. €20,000 of the fund will go towards the footpath refurbishment at Farmgate, Charleville.
