While Coirm Gael Linn, the annual school talent show festival organised by Gael Linn is not a competition as such, there's always a drive among the groups to perform to their best. And so it was on Wednesday last when the event took place in Fermoy Youth Theatre.

Almost 400 pupils from schools in counties Cork, Waterford and Tipperary took part in the one-day feast of music, singing, dancing and drama. Each school presented a 20-minute variety show 'as Gaeilge' with a theme of their choice, using the musical and dramatic talents of pupils from either one class or different classes.

The hall was packed to capacity and the appreciative audience, comprising schoolchildren, parents and teachers were entertained before and after each show by the popular entertainer 'Guido Fanzini'.

Each show is reviewed by a guest adjudicator and a written critique is given to each teacher. Special merit awards or 'gradaim' are awarded at the adjudicator's discretion for outstanding performances by individuals or ensembles.

On Wednesday last the adjudicator, Tomás Ó Nialláin, after complimenting the teachers for the high standard of production from all the participating schools, presented three awards to Gaelscoil de hÍde, Fermoy, for their show 'An tAsarlaí ó Oz (The Wizard of Oz) for the whole cast for its superb presentation, for music, movement and comedy and for Dorothy's song. Teacher Martina de Róiste was delighted.

The pupils of Presentation Convent primary school in Doneraile also received three awards, for team spirit, musical and acting skills, movement, dance and mime displayed throughout their show 'An Lollipop Draíochta' (The Magic Lollipop). It made for a poignant day for school principal Éamonn Ó hArgáin whose last show it was to produce before his retirement after 47 years this summer. Eamonn had classes participate in every Coirm Gael Linn since the event started.

Glanmire's Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil went home with two awards from the event, for a recitation by the young cast and the high standard of acting from the principal characters during their show 'An Garbhán (The Gruffalo). Teacher Caroline Ruiséal was delighted with her pupil's success.

Coirm Gael Linn was introduced in 2002 by Gael Linn. The organisation marks its 60th anniversary this year, celebrating a long tradition of using the arts as a medium for promoting the Irish language among young people. Fermoy was one of nine festivals being held at various venues nationwide.
