Following the significant news that large-scale First World War underground bunker and trench systems have been discovered at the Lynch Camp in Kilworth, one local historian has said there is great scope for further field surveys in the area.

The find, carried out by an archaeological team from Queen’s University Belfast, at the military camp in Kilworth is believed to be one of the largest and best preserved ever built in Britain and Ireland.

The team carried out their first survey of the land in late 2013, having acquired permission from the Department of Defence and the Defence Forces, followed by a further examination of the site last summer.

Local historian, Christy Roche told The Avondhu that he welcomed the research on the vast trenches in Kilworth, and supports any further surveys in the local area.
