Shanballymore native, Katie Burke, is setting out on a vigorous fundraising campaign, as herself and a friend hope to be part of the Nelson Mandela Tribute School Building Blitz with the Niall Mellon Township Trust.

The girls will have to raise €9,000 between them and Katie said that she would be delighted to be a part of such a momentous building project, particularly given the historical significance of the project with Mandela's death on December 5, 2013. 

Katie who works as an accountant in Cork city will be hoping to go over with Judy Dunne from Dromina and they have organised a series of local fundraisers to help them on their way.

These include a table quiz in The Red Bog in Dromina on February 28, the widely acclaimed Santa Ponsa show in Shanballymore Community Centre on March 29, a raffle for two Garth Brooks Sunday night tickets or a flat screen TV and a sponsored walk followed by an Easter egg hunt in Dromina GAA Grounds on Saturday, April 19. 

Katie's brother and sister have both travelled abroad with different charities and it was something Katie always wanted to do.

She said that she hopes it will be a life changing experience and it's always nice to do something good and give back to a community in need.

Over the years, the Niall Mellon Township Trust has housed over 100,000 South Africans and now plans to educate children in Africa through an ambitious school building programme.

"At present, many schools throughout the entire continent of Africa are quite literally falling down. This means many children are being denied the education they need to realise their full potential in life. We as volunteers would like to change this," Katie said.
