Local Dad taking on Paris marathon to ‘give back’ to CUMH

Little Lauren McCarthy, with mum Aoife, dad CJ and sister Zara, was born weighing just 3lb and nine weeks early after a midwife discovered an abnormal heart rate. Her father CJ is running the Paris marathon to raise funds for dedicated rooms for the parents of stillborn and premature babies at CUMH.

Local man, CJ McCarthy, whose daughter’s life was saved by a midwifery team, is joining a major effort to build dedicated rooms for the parents of stillborn and premature babies.

Lauren McCarthy was born nine weeks premature in 2021, weighing just 3lb, and spent six weeks slowly building her strength in the neonatal ward of Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH), a facility which CJ is now trying to give back to by completing the Paris Marathon as a fundraiser.

Speaking with The Avondhu, CJ explained that it wasn’t until his wife, Aoife (33) attended CUMH for an Anti-D injection 31 weeks into her pregnancy that they found there was a problem with baby Lauren.
