Residents in north and east Cork were among tens of thousands of people who attended the December 10 demonstration in Dublin in protest against water charges.

The march was organised by Right2Water and smaller community groups, and saw what some claim to be upwards of 100,000 people march through the streets of Dublin. Some commentators put that figure as low as 30,000.

Among those in attendance were William Hughes and Pat Conroy, organisers of two Fermoy protests against the introduction of water charges. Further marches are expected to take place locally in the New Year.

Despite the mass demonstrations that have occurred around the country, Environment Minister Alan Kelly said he doesn’t envisage anything changing in relation to the package at all.

He said: “We have to go down this route, there is simply no other route. I am quite content in relation to where we are at and where we will go. I am satisfied that this will be delivered.”
