A concerned local contacted The Avondhu this week regarding works being carried out in a deciduous woodland area at the rear of Aldi car park in Mitchelstown.

Machinery was seen behind the gate of the car park within the woodland, owned by Kingston Trust, with some minor groundworks having been carried out, spurring local concern for the woodlands.

The Mitchelstown resident feared the clearing of trees in the area, noting the importance of the native woodland and believing that works being carried out may be in respect of a car park extension to the adjacent store.

“This is one of the few remaining pieces of natural deciduous wood left in the area, it should be protected for wildlife and developed into a nature amenity for the public,” the man said.
