Lismore Heritage Centre was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the National Heritage Week Awards. Their 'Monk-y Business' event was held in the centre as part of Heritage Week 2013.
Aimed at primary schoolchildren, their two hour workshop was designed to allow the participating children discover what it entailed to be a monk in the ancient monastery at Lismore. The event made the Irish Times list of '40 things to do in Heritage Week'.
It was shortlisted in the Best Children's Event category. The overall winner of the category was a Shipwreck Dig Workshop organised by the Heritage House in Abbeyleix, Co Laois.
Mealla Fahey, Project Manager at Lismore Heritage Centre said Heritage Week is a wonderful celebration of Ireland's rich history.
"It is also a week-long, nationwide festival with thousands and thousands of events taking place so to even be considered for such an award is an immense honour. We pride ourselves on the quality of our children's programme here at Lismore Heritage Centre with very popular camps and After School Science Clubs so it is particularly nice to be recognised in the Children's Event category."
The centre plans to be involved this year again when Heritage Week takes place from August 23 to 31. "Who knows? Maybe this year we can come up with something to scoop first place," Mealla Fahey says.
