This Friday, New Square in Mitchelstown will become a beacon for festive cheer, as the local Lions Club have announced that their Christmas tree will once again light up the area.

President of the Lions Club, Therese Horgan said that Mitchelstown is lucky to have a focal point in the town with the square and the Christmas tree takes pride of place there every year, in the lead up to Christmas.

The tree will be lit up this Friday, December 6 at 6pm and to add to the festive atmosphere, children from the town will be singing carols while the fire brigade will be bringing a special guest from the North Pole - so all of the boys and girls need to be on their best behaviour.

This year, the Lions Club are also giving people the chance to get involved and be part of Christmas in the town, through their 'Sponsor a Christmas Tree Light' campaign. Before, during and after December 6, people can buy raffle tickets in all local shops and businesses and they will also be on sale on the night in the Square. At only €2 a line or €5 for three, all ticket holders will be entered into a draw to win one of two family holidays to Trabolgan, in addition to a number of wonderful hampers.

All proceeds from the raffle will go towards the Lions Club, to help fund community days such as family fun days, trips to Trabolgan for the older members of the community, to support local charities, clubs and groups and for the Mitchelstown Lions Club Christmas tree.
