Legacy issues divide Mitchelstown and Fermoy

The difference between Mitchelstown and Fermoy came to the fore at Tuesday’s Fermoy MD meeting, with road sweepers at the centre of it.

While Fermoy has a regular motorised road sweeper tidying the town, Mitchelstown does not. Cllr Deirdre O’Brien asked why – and it is because Fermoy has a legacy and an advantage because it used to have a town council.

Staff arrangements and ‘terms and conditions’ means that the road sweeper and its operators stay in Fermoy. While Mitchelstown has the option of the use of the one in Mallow, it was explained by council staff that it is very busy in the summer, and not ‘possible nor practical’ to bring it to Mitchelstown regularly.
