Breffní O'Brien from Kilworth got a nice surprise for her 18th birthday last week when she was presented with a framed copy of her winning entry in a competition to design a cover for Cork Simon Community's annual report.

The presentation was made by Minister Simon Coveney at the launch of the report at the emergency shelter on Anderson's Quay in Cork on Friday last.

Breffní entered the competition to design a suitable cover for the homeless charity's annual report through her school, the Loreto in Fermoy.

It was the second year the cover of Cork Simon’s annual report was chosen from a competition among second-level schools. Breffní used newspaper collage and pencil drawing to create her artwork, which she captioned, ‘A Moment of Compassion’.

“Newspaper headlines focus on money, the recession and negative captions. It seems that money is the most important thing a person can have, when in fact a moment of compassion can be more life changing for a homeless person. Cork Simon offers compassion, friendship and opportunity to people who are homeless,” she said of her design.

Breffní is the daughter of Noel O'Brien and artist Fiona Turley who owns Gallery Crafts in Kilworth.
