Celtic got the 2013/2014 season off to a fun start with a juvenile blitz last Thursday and the Richard Clancy Cup veterans game drawing huge crowds on Saturday last. The juvenile blitz got under way on Thursday evening with Fermoy FC and Brideview Utd providing the opposition. On the night some fine footballing skills on show and everyone enjoyed the games and fun feel to the blitz. Fermoy U8s running out deserved winners on the night, beating their U9 colleagues in the final, with Brideview Utd beating the Celtic U9s in the plate section.

All players received their medals from chairman Gus Shanahan who wished continued success for the festival committee in Kilworth.

On Saturday evening the veterans of former Fermoy-based club Accrington Celtic and Kilworth Celtic FC did battle for the Richard Clancy Cup. This game has switched to veterans only in the last two seasons for the festival and what a difference with some fantastic craic and banter exchanged throughout the game.

Joe Aherne Junior provided the PA system commentary and with veterans such as Joe Aherne senior, Ger McCarthy, Darrian O’Donoghue, Ricky Ivory, Tommy Seymour, Mark Ryan and Gerry Lane to mention a few, it certainly made for riveting viewing. Even with Diarmuid Motty McCormack providing a Roger Miller type dance on the night and Frankie Shaw making a guest appearance, it couldn't help Celtic in avoiding defeat, as the much fitter and slightly younger Accrington veterans proved too strong, winning 2-1 on the night in what was a great evening of festival fun. Well done to all.
