Kilworth cycle group raise over €37k for Breakthrough Cancer Research

‘The support we’ve received over the 6 years has been truly remarkable …’ – Aishling McLoughlin

During the last 6 years, members of the McLoughlin family in Kilworth and their extensive circle of friends and supporters, have managed to raise over €160,000 for Breakthrough Cancer Research through a series of long distance cycles held in memory of the late, Eamonn McLoughlin.

By any standard this is a remarkable amount of money as well as being a reminder that with a good team behind you anything is possible.

Last year's 200km round trip between Dunmanway in west Cork and Kilworth took place on September 21 and was once again a test of stamina for the 170 participants, however, thanks to a good training regime, all the cyclists managed to safely complete the route - the final figure raised came to €37,127.28.

The official handover of the cheque took place in The Grand Hotel, Fermoy before Christmas with Dr Declan Soden of Breakthrough Cancer Research on hand to accept the money. Recently, Aishling McLoughlin (Eamonn's daughter), was in touch with The Avondhu wishing to thank all those who've helped make the cycle so successful.

Aishling, who is based in London, said the fundraiser wouldn't be possible without the support of family, friends, neighbours as well as the many companies and businesses who offer assistance.

Aishling went on to say that it was important to acknowledge the public's fantastic support of the event. "The support we've received over the 6 years has been truly remarkable and hopefully it's a source of comfort and encouragement to many knowing that all funds are going towards vital research into the prevention and treatment of cancer" she said.
