Kilworth Camp lands ‘earmarked for NATO airstrip’, former TD claims

Way back in 1983, and again in 1985, Ned O’Keeffe TD queried if it was possible to take a long-term lease of land at Kilworth Camp.

The answer was no, as 'military requirements preclude the granting of long-term leases of the lands in question'. These ‘military requirements’, he claims, are because the land is earmarked for a NATO airstrip that could accommodate 45,000 troops.

Speaking with The Avondhu, Mr O’Keeffe said the lands were the most influential in the country for that purpose, and that he was ‘pulled aside’ at the time and told to desist from raising the issue again.

He also claimed that the value of the facility was to be £350 million.
