Killavullen Farmers’ Market commenced trading in 2002, 11 years ago this month. The market was launched as a result of an inspiring talk, ‘The Food We Buy’ given by Darina Allen earlier that year.
While the market is a commercial hub for local producers, it has a very important social aspect to it. Chatting with the stall holders, catching up with friends over a cup of fair trade coffee and going for a walk along the many scenic paths around the Nano Nagle Centre, where the market is located, are all part of the ritual that is a visit to the Killavullen Farmers’ fortnightly market.
The location itself is spectacular. Nestled next to the river Blackwater, the Nano Nagle Centre is the birthplace of the founder of the Presentation Order of nuns. The centre and grounds have an amazing sense of peace and harmony about it. Many activities occur at the centre including retreats, conferences, sustainable living courses, as well as music classes run by the local Cuisle Avondhu Music School.
Every second Saturday, Killavullen Farmers’ Market stallholders lay out their wares to tempt you, under cover of the market tunnel. The local producers supply local organic fruit and vegetables, award winning cheeses, raw milk and homemade butter, jams, chutneys and cordials, artisan breads and tasty home baking, natural essential oils and handmade soaps, Irish toiletries, apples and apple juices, ‘Raw Food’ products, plants and flowers, pretty hand knitting, Fairtrade tea and coffee, pizzas made before you at the cob oven, eco-friendly cleaning products and fair trade products and second hand books for charity. And if the location and atmosphere isn’t enough to make you relax and feel completely at home, Nora Creed is at hand for Indian Head Massage. And, as the seasons change, guest stall holders will pop up to share their produce.
Killavullen Farmers’ Market birthday market on this Saturday, November 23 from 10.30 to 1pm. Come and join us for festive fun and frolics.
