As opposition to EirGrid's Grid Link project widens across the region, Cllr Kevin O'Keeffe has rowed in behind those against the positioning of giant pylons in north Cork.

He sought support from his colleagues at the northern area meeting of the county council on Monday for a motion to be brought before the full meeting of  Cork County Council next week, calling on them to request that EirGrid put the lines linking Munster and Leinster underground. The motion includes a request that EirGrid meet with landowners and communities to listen to their concerns and allay the public's fears on health and safety. Cllr Noel McCarthy seconded the motion.

Cllr. O'Keeffe's party colleague, Cllr. Frank O'Flynn insists however that he had already tabled a motion to that effect for the county council meeting on Monday next. He said he did so following representations made to him by local communities and farmers.

Public information evenings continued around the area this week, with one held in Tallow on Tuesday night for the communities in that region. Last week the 'Bride and Blackwater Against Pylons' campaign group opened an office in Lismore manned by volunteers giving information about the project and its ramifications for the area.

A strong anti lobby groups has also emerged in south Tipperary.

People have until Tuesday next, November 26 to get their submissions in to EirGrid. That feedback will be used by the company to identify the corridor least constrained, that is, the route with the least environmental, social, technical and other obstacles to be overcome.
