Fermoy town was described as a housing ‘blackspot’, with the monthly meeting of the town’s UDC hearing that 120 applicants were on the waiting list. Cllr Tadhg O’Donovan proposed writing to the minister, saying that as the list was ‘drastically increasing’, it might be possible to house all the applicants in 10-12 years! While Cllr Michael Hanley noted that there were applicants on the list from as far afield as Glanmire, Watergrasshill, Ballynoe, etc and wondered if the UDC ‘had an obligation to house people outside its pale’.
Residents in the Labbacally area of Glanworth were complaining of ‘excessive chlorine smells coming from their piped water’. Concerned locals contacted The Avondhu, with one individual particularly worried about the chemical, ‘she having visited the Greenpeace ship ‘Solo’, in Cork where she had been supplied with some anti-chlorine information’. While another local ‘was sickened by the smell and was boiling water’.
A four person deputation of locals living adjacent to the Ballyguyroe official council infill dump, protested at Cork County Council’s Northern Division meeting. The deputation, introduced by Senator Joe Sherlock, heard from Sandra Mellor from Quitrent, Kildorrery who spoke of the plague of flies ‘which would have done Moses proud when the Israelites were having a problem in Egypt’. While Tom Ahern, who farmed in the area, told the meeting of an incident where one of his cows ‘had some of its flesh eaten by a swarm of blue bottles’. He also noted a surface run off of water, which had locals concerned about possible contamination to their water supplies. Deputy Ned O’Keeffe added that he had heard from farmers, who were worried about ‘the lagoon overflow into the Funcheon at Scart’. However, assistant deputy county engineer, Michael O’Brien told the meeting that “there was no question of that”, as there was “no leaching” at the site and the contents of the underground holding tanks was taken for treatment in Charleville.
Mitchelstown band Snatch won a place in the final of the Carling sponsored ‘The Square Rocks’ competition. Consisting of Patsy O’Brien, Frank McCarthy, Danny Sheehan and Barry Smith, the band were hoping to secure the top prize of €1,000, plus a promotional video. It was reported that the band were set for a tour in France in September 1993.
News in brief – The twinning of Doneraile with the Upper New York state town of Ramapo hung ‘on a knife edge’, due to the protracted Aer Lingus industrial dispute, with organizers hoping for a swift resolution. The National Irish Bank on MacCurtain Street in Fermoy was set for the appointment of a new manager, with George Smith, a native of County Cavan, set to replace Michael Leogue, who was taking over a new branch in Clonmel. Fermoy traders were feeling the effects of slack trade in the town – one businessman said he was worried due to no growth in the local economy, saying they were seeing ‘the same returns as two years ago’; while another trader expressed disappointment at the lack of tourists, while those passing through the town were ‘not spending much’.
