The Fermoy Senior Citizens Association's Jailbreak on Saturday, July 6 turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable trip and one of our most interesting short tours to date.

The day started with a most informative guided tour around Cork City Gaol as we listened to an outline of the often-bleak history of the Gaol and the unfortunate circumstances that lead many of its inmates to be forced to live in such miserable conditions. The clever audio visual at the conclusion of the tour really brought to life some of the Gaol's most famous and indeed infamous inmates.

From there we headed to Cobh where we enjoyed a spot of breakfast in the Commodore Hotel having secured our position in front of a large TV screen to watch with great excitement the British & Irish Lions rugby team defeat their Australian counterparts in the final test match of the 2013 tour.

With spirits high from the win and with the sun blasting through the Cobh skies we boarded the ferry to bring us to the famous Spike Island. On the Island we were greeted by John our gregarious tour guide who notwithstanding his many years of army service stationed in Cork he still retained his strong Dublin accent and wit!

To our great surprise the island was not only an interesting place but in the glorious summer sunshine a most beautiful and peaceful place. We strolled around the island at a leisurely pace learning about the interesting historical events and uses of the Island over the years.

Back on dry land, many of us enjoyed a little liquid refreshment as we sat watching the boats sail into Cork Harbour and enjoyed the holiday atmosphere of Cobh on such a sunny day.

Our coach, provided by the ever reliable O'Sullivan's coaches of Kildorrery, dropped us up to Cobh Cathedral were we attended Saturday evening mass and enjoyed the beautiful hymns sung by the Cathedral Choir.

From there we headed for the hills in the direction of Glenville, which we reached just in time for the start of the Kilkenny/Tipperary hurling match and where the staff of Kade’s Kounty restaurant/bar had a fantastic meal ready waiting for us.

Once fed and watered we had just enjoy time and energy left to finish the day off with an evening of dancing as we joined the Kade's Kounty Saturday night regulars to ensure that the dance floor was full all night.

Our really lovely trip reminded both our members and the committee that you don’t have to step foot outside of the County of Cork to have one of the best days out ever.
