380 fines were issued by Cork County Council last year to pet owners found to be without a dog licence. That was up on 2012, when 239 fines were issued.

The Avondhu understands that a number of people in north Cork were dismayed in recent months to have been issued with fines for not holding a dog licence. This newspaper was informed that a number of offenders, who didn't pay the fines, found themselves in court and wound up with even heavier fines and added costs. One such was an elderly man who said the court fine was very harsh and he couldn't afford to pay it.

The fine was increased from €30 to €100 from June 1st last year. Many dog owners appear to be unaware of the hefty increase. They are on-the-spot fines issued by the local authority. Failure to pay the on-the-spot fines can lead to prosecution in the District Court with a maximum fine of €2,500 and/or three months' imprisonment.
