Whether on the road, farm, building site or on our coastline, rivers and lakes, fatal accidents are life altering events for families and loved ones.
While completely eliminating such tragedies is impossible, the frequency of such incidents can be reduced and in this regard, education, especially regarding young people, is vital.
Cork County Council are commiting considerable resources to educational programmes – aimed at primary school pupils in particular. An excellent example of this was seen recently when the local authority hosted a day long programme of safety awareness activities at the 'Tir na Si' open farm in Watergrasshill.
Participating national schools included: Ballydehob, Goleen, Scull and Glenville. Among the high profile attendees were: Tim Lucey (CEO of Cork County Council), Director of Services Tom Stritch, and Mayor of County Cork, Cllr Seamus McGrath. All the emergency services (Gardai, ambulance, fire brigade and coast guard) were also represented.
