Lismore club look forward to Croke Park trip
Wilton Bowls Club staged the final session of their annual licensed fours competition for the James Gilmore Memorial Trophy on Sunday, March 10 and held in the SMA Parish Hall, Wilton.
The tournament was once again a great success and attracted teams from all the leading clubs in the Cork Zone and resulted in a victory for Douglas GAA who defeated Glounthaune in the final.
The final was umpired by Tom Liston. At the conclusion of play Neil O’Keeffe (club captain) presented the prizes and the James Gilmore Memorial Trophy was presented by Kathleen Gilmore to Danny Twohig (skip) of the winning team.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
Semi-finals: Glounthaune (A Ruxton) beat Wilton (Breda McTeggart, Betty O’Keeffe, Donie O’Leary and Neil O’Keeffe) and Douglas GAA (D Twohig) beat Conna (George Tanner, Dave Cliff, John Martin and Adrian Tanner).
Final: Douglas GAA (Ann Twohig, Michael Daly, Paddy Barry and Danny Twohig) beat Glounthaune (Rory Canning, Marian Canning, Liam O’Connell and Albert Ruxton) (7/6).
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The qualifying rounds of the (IIBA) National championships started on Saturday, March 9 in the Shaw’s Bridge Indoor Stadium, Belfast, Co Antrim with eight Cork Zone players taking part.
National Singles: Con Middleton (Crosshaven) lost to A Thom (Larne) and Liam Conlon (Watergrasshill) lost to F McAdoo (Monaghan).
National Fours: (Mary Boyde, D Riordan, Sheila O’Leary and Martin Sisk – Ballincollig GAA) beat M Reid (Balmoral S E Belfast) in the first round and lost the second match to finalist Uel McKeeman (North Eastern).
Ladies Pairs: Majella Conlon and Josie O’Riordan (Watergrasshill) beat Ruth Crawford (Donegal) in round one and lost the second match to June Henderson (Mid Tyrone). The second session of the National championships will take place at Shaw’s Bridge on Saturday, March 23, commencing at 10.30pm.
BRITISH ISLES ‘A’ SERIES INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
All bowlers in the Cork Zone wish Conor Middleton good luck when he represents Ireland in the A Series Internationals in Dumfries, Scotland on Saturday 16 and Sunday, March 17. We wish Conor and his supporters a safe journey and an enjoyable and successful weekend.
