Southern Stars light up the social dance scene
The Irish Chamber Orchestra visit Friars’ Gate on this Thursday, 11th July. This concert will feature a very special work, The Turn – Dance in Your Blood by Linda Buckley. Colin Dunne best known for his performances and choreography in Riverdance provides a mesmeric dance to Buckley’s stunning new composition.
“This new work shows a different facet of my compositional style, full of rhythmic energy and drama. I am excited collaborating with Colin Dunne, exploring interaction and interplay between dance and sound. There is an added electronic element to this, where amplification of dance steps is used to trigger live processing of sound,” says Buckley.
Erkki-Sven Tüür’s 'Action - Passion – Illusion' is a stunning work with warm string tones. 'Action' resembles a Bartokian march, 'Passion' is elegiac and begins slowly, becoming faster before reaching an electifying conclusion and 'Illusion' is hypnotic and its articulation is breath-taking.
Dvořák's Op. 54 waltzes offer a pair of charming, three-minute bonbons that inspired his student, Josef Suk. With echoes of Dvorák, Suk’s romantic Serenade for Strings Op. 6, remains one of his best-loved works. The movements are shining gems and the Irish Chamber Orchestra makes them sparkle all the more.
Comedy Gems with Cora Fenton
On Friday, 19th July, Friars’ Gate will host 'Bonfire Night' and 'Arsehammers', written by Claire Dowie, presented by Call Back theatre, directed by John Sheehy and performed by Cora Fenton. This 50 minute show comprises a pair of darkly comic gems, 'Bonfire Night' in which a daughter takes her sweet revenge and 'Arsehammers', where a grandchild is sure that her grandfather's strange disappearances reveal supernatural powers.
The delivery is natural and conversational. It's very funny: the subjects are serious but there is a wicked sense of humour underlying everything. Story telling with a difference and funny too! Most recently Cora has been seen as Alice in the acclaimed 'Fred & Alice'. Tickets €10, booking at www.friarsgate.ie or call 063-98727.
