There was significant construction progress in the Castlefarm site in Dairygold, Mitchelstown last week, as an industrial crane spent two days on a huge equipment lift to place parts of the new milk dryer and evaporator into place.

According to John Mahony, Head Of Engineering and Processing Development, “The main body of the new dryer weighed a massive 35 tonnes and took several hours meticulous manoeuvring to lift it safely into place. Thankfully all went according to plan and we are looking forward to the next stage of internal fit-out.”

The lift is part of Dairygold’s €33 million investment at the site, to meet the initial needs of the projected increase in post quota milk supply volumes.

It involves the construction of new milk intake bays, a new dairy plant for pasteurisation and separation, new evaporation system, a new multi-purpose milk dryer and a new bag-off operations. It will be commissioned in time for next year’s peak milk season.

Castlefarm represents Phase One of Dairygold’s processing expansion programme and will give it the initial expansion in processing capacity through next year’s peak and into 2015. Phase Two earmarks Dairygold existing site in Mallow for re-development where the Co-op has planning permission for the construction of a new state-of-the-art milk drying facility to produce the full range of milk powders.
