Huge achievement for Fermoy swimmer in Brazil

Owen O'Keefe after many hours of swimming on his challenge from Leme to Pontal.

Owen O’Keefe has made Fermoy proud once again as he attempted the 35km costal swim from Leme to Pontal starting at Praia do Leme in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Unfortunately, due to unexpected adverse weather conditions, Owen did not complete the challenge in totality but managed to complete 28.5km having swam for over 10 hours in the Atlantic Ocean.

Having landed in Brazil on December 12, it was confirmed that Owen could swim on the 17th. However, a thick fog descended and poor visibility meant that the organisation had to postpone Owen’s swim to the following night.

Following a briefing with two other swimmers at midnight on the 18th, Owen began the mammoth challenge.

“I felt very comfortable,” Owen said. “The water temperature was lovely.”
