There is scarcely a day goes by that people's homes and cars aren't broken into by opportunist thieves who are quite happy to leech on the public without qualm or conscience.

Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald said the new Bill is proportionate in that it is targeted at offenders with previous convictions who are charged with multiple offences of residential burglary. Her determination that they should be 'dealt with robustly' is a very welcome stance and is an initiative that is long overdue.

The Garda authorities seem to be helpless with most, if not all of the burglaries that are reported upon. Perhaps there are not enough checks being carried out to identify those who are carrying stolen goods in their vehicles as proposed by one of our readers last week?

One thing we do need to do is drop the 'softly softly' approach and have the perpetrators feel the severity of the sentence.
