HGVs ‘deliberately vandalising’ bridge barriers

Barriers at Glanworth Bridge, put in place to restrict Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) from accessing the protected structure, are being ‘deliberately vandalised’.

Cork County Council Senior Executive Engineer, Brendan O’Gorman, told councillors at a recent meeting of the Fermoy Municipal District, that agricultural contractors are deliberately vandalising the barriers in order to avoid detours to get to the village.

The topic of the barriers was raised by local councillor, Frank Roche, who said that a concerned resident had contacted him with fears that HGVs may cause damage to the bridge.

“If that bridge gets damaged and is closed for any reason, that knocks off their accessibility to Glanworth and Glanworth needs all the support it has,” Cllr Roche said.
