The announcement this week of a €33 million investment by Dairygold to expand and upgrade its milk processing facilities in Mitchelstown is good news indeed. 100 jobs will be created in the construction, installation and commissioning phases of the new processing facilities which, we are told, will give rise to sustained employment at the Castlefarm site.

While they may be few in number, this is a definite 'green shoot' to give us encouragement as we continue with the struggle to get back to a healthier economy.

Dairygold’s 3,000 milk suppliers expect to increase annual milk production by more than 50% by 2020 following the abolition of EU milk quotas in April 2015. When completed, the facility in Mitchelstown will be the Irish Dairy industry’s first post quota infrastructure to become operational, with commissioning scheduled for next year’s peak milk season.

The fact that a number of major trade names seem interested in locating in Mitchelstown is also welcome news. Add to this, the upcoming completion of the Fermoy Flood Plan and we can subsequently expect many more positives to follow. In the meantime, let's continue to shop and support local as we look to more promising times ahead!
