People in West Waterford are going to see less of a familiar face about the place, following the retirement of popular local Garda Jim Nolan. Jim, who lives in Ballyduff, has been stationed at Lismore Garda Station for the past 14 years.

The retirement party given by his colleagues last Saturday night in An Sibín in Ballyduff was a lively affair with much good-natured banter from colleagues directed his way along with very many tributes to his dedication to the job and the area and his committed approach to his work.

Jim, a native of Waterford city, was first stationed in Mitchelstown back in 1983. In an unusual move, he then sought a transfer to Dublin and was stationed in Blackrock where he spent the next 17 years. He worked for 10 of those years as a Juvenile Liaison Officer. He took up the position in Lismore in Aprll 1999 and he and his wife Katie, who works in the AIB in Fermoy, settled into the community with their son and two daughters.

Jim says he's now looking forward to spending more time gardening and enjoying the outdoor life.
