Jack L returns to The Village Arts Centre, Kilworth
While Athlone may be the place to be for competitive drama next week, two wonderful pieces of theatre are on the programme at The Village Arts Centre, Kilworth on two consecutive nights, Wednesday May 7 and Thursday, May 8.
Alison Skillbeck who brought us the wonderfully entertaining 'Are There More Of You' last year, she returns this time on Wednesday, 7th May with another compelling piece of drama which she herself has penned - 'Mrs Roosevelt Goes To London'. The following night, Thursday 8th, it's the turn of another lady who is no stranger to the Kilworth stage - Cora Fenton who, with Ciaran Bermingham, brings us a play that was one of the most popular shows of last year, 'Fred & Alice', courtesy Callback Theatre.
Tickets for each show are €12 (€10 concessions). To make both shows even more accessible, patrons can take in the two shows at the special ticket price of €20.
'MRS ROOSEVELT'
In October 1942, Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the President, takes a dangerous trip to wartime London, to visit US troops, and see how the British, most importantly the women, are coping.
In her last days, as the Cuban Missile Crisis pushes the world to the brink of final catastrophe, Eleanor relives her journey, from bomb-damaged Buckingham Palace to midnight factories. She also recalls her life, from unhappy child, to unconventional wife, to becoming, in President Truman's words 'First Lady of the World'.
Granted special permission to use Eleanor's writings, Alison Skilbeck's new one-woman show explores the public, and hidden life of one of the most extraordinary women of the 20th century, a woman beset by deep personal insecurities and tragedy, but one who never lost her passionate belief in the strength of the human spirit.
'FRED & ALICE'
It’s not easy to get by in this crazy old world is it? But Fred and Alice have discovered that all you really need are 2 tennis rackets, a freezer full of ready meals and an immature coping strategy.
Fred and Alice first met in the home. It wasn’t really a home but Fred always called it a home because that was where he lived, and if you are not living at home then where are you? It was love at first sight for Alice. Fred didn’t talk to her again for years but then eventually Fred got used to her and it was love at first sight for him too.
From their days in care, to independent living, Fred and Alice negotiate the perils and pitfalls of life and love.
Come see this joyous celebration of individuality.
'Fred & Alice' got listed in December as 'one of 2013s Arts highlights in Limerick' in the Limerick Post.
'Fred & Alice' has been described as “clever and absorbing stuff”……. “Imaginative and escapist theatricality” by The Irish Times
