A time capsule buried 15 years ago, was this week dug up at Glenville National School for re-homing due to ongoing construction works, but not before a look at it’s fascinating contents.

Buried in the school grounds in 2000, the capsule contains a host of items from the school, the community and society at the time, a number of which were described to the assembled crowds by pupils in the school.

A new school is currently being constructed, and within a few months the ground on which the capsule was buried will be paved over with concrete.

School principal Michael O’Donnell, said the time capsule was buried by the school to mark the Millennium. “One of the things we did at the time was we laid a time capsule, and the time capsule contained things in use at the time. We didn’t expect to be digging it up after only 15 years because the idea was something long term, maybe 50 years.”

Robert and Grace Kelleher, who were the youngest pupils enrolled in the school at the time of the capsule being buried, where invited to open it 15 years on.
