Glenville garda station is one of four recently closed stations in county Cork to be sold off. The others are Meelin, Inchigeela and Mallow Road. 20 of the 139 garda stations closed across the country in the last two years are due to be sold on the open market by the summer.

Cork north west TD, Michael Moynihan, this week criticised the government’s decision to sell the stations, saying it was yet another loss for the four Cork communities.

“Their local garda station has already been shut down and now the building which was once a focal point of the community is being sold off,” he said.

The government should have made every effort, he insisted, to ensure that the buildings are given back to the community “and can remain at the heart of community life.”

The OPW has said however that around 20 community groups have expressed an interest in taking over the properties and in some cases they may be given to community and voluntary groups for their use. Ballyduff in West Waterford is one such community who’ve asked the OPW to let them have the old station there so that they can retain it for community use.

A public meeting was recently held in the village to discuss what use the property could be put to and a couple of ideas which emerged from that are now being actively pursued.
