Glenroe Gathering event set to bring in the crowds

September is already being eagerly anticipated in the Glenroe area, with their Gathering event looking set to bring in the crowds, from home and abroad.

Over the past year, the community in Glenroe have been actively planning what to do for this year's Gathering and the impressive programme of events shows that there hasn't been an idle moment, as the committee have worked hard to find something for everyone.

To encorporate the Gathering theme, Glenroe GAA had launched a 'Bring 'em home' competition to bring someone from Glenroe, or with connections to the area, home for the festival with flights and accomodation in the Ballyhoura Forest Homes to the value of €2,000.

It has now been revealed that the lucky winner is Deirdre Fitzgerald (nee Drake) of Houndscourt, Ballyorgan, who now lives in Brisbane, Australia with her husband Niall and daughter Senna and everyone in Glenroe is looking forward to welcoming Deirdre and her family home for the Gathering.

The Glenroe Harvest Festival will open on September 7 with many Gathering centred events. On that day from 11.30am until 2pm, there will be a trip to Scoil Mhuire, where people can take a step back in time, as they walk down memory lane and view the roll books from years gone by.

RETRACING ROOTS

Then from 2.30pm until 5pm in the marquee, the Bard of Mologga, Mike Cullen Ahearne will reminisce on the days of old and people will also get the chance to meet and greet their extended family members and start or grow their family tree, with help from Glenroe native Tim O'Connell and his team of trained facilitators, followed by afternoon tea.

To prepare for this event, there will be a training programme in Glenroe Hall, this Saturday, August 24 from 10am until 3pm on Ireland Reaching Out and geneology, facilitated by Ballyhoura Development. Those involved in the training will be on hand on September 7 to help families to research their family tree and they will be led by Tim O'Connell, who has a great interest in this field. Anyone interested in the training can contact Amanda on 063 91300 and all families interested in attending the geneology workshops on September 7 can contact the committee members.

The events on September 7 will then conclude with a Gathering Mass at 7pm, followed by music and entertainment in the marquee at 8pm with Perfect Friction.
