Units of Fermoy Fire Brigade were called to join others from around the county in tackling a major fire at the Greenstar Waste Recycling plant in Glanmire on Friday night.

Crews from Fermoy joined up to a dozen others from Midleton, Ballincollig, Cork city and surrounding areas in tackling the fierce blaze which was reported at 7.30pm. It destroyed the plant and machinery, causing an estimated €10M worth of damage.

The Fermoy brigade received the call to assist at the scene at Sarsfield Court at 9pm on Friday night. It took more than an hour to bring the blaze under control. The Fermoy crews remained there until mid afternoon on Sunday.

Luckily no-one was injured as the fire occurred after hours and the premises was closed. The scene was preserved and Gardai forensic specialists were this week carrying out a technical examination to determine the cause.

It was said by fire service personnel to be the biggest blaze they've had to deal with for some considerable time.

In July this year there was a serious fire at the John Dunlea Waste Disposal site at Cullenagh, Fermoy. Luckily that fire was spotted by a member of staff who raised the alarm and while sheds were damaged the owners managed to save an estimated half a million euros worth of machinery and equipment.
