More than 50 dancers are going through a once weekly rehearsal programme in Fermoy as they prepare to battle in a ballroom dancing spectacle that should prove to be the most spectacular social event this area has seen.

Heading up the list of dancers for 'Strictly Fermoy', are two political heavyweights, Noel McCarthy and Kevin O'Keeffe whose last challenge was in the boxing ring. The event is scheduled for April 11 at the Radisson Hotel, Little Island to help the funds of the local GAA club.

“We’re absolutely thrilled by the response and by the dedication of the dancers who start out with a single training session every week before going to two sessions a week”, organiser Jacqui Creed said this week.

“There is a lot of commitment involved in this fundraiser and we are very pleased by the number of people who want to participate and by their level of commitment for the event on April 11”, she added.

This will arguably be the most popular of all such undertakings for Fermoy GAA. The 50 plus dancers are now practicing every Sunday under a team of professional instructors to ensure that the gala show is worthy of the name ‘Strictly’.

There is already a special social media site up and running; a ‘Strictly Fermoy’ float is also planned for the St Patrick’s Day parade and there will be special posters created and distributed around the town to promote specific dance pairings.

As this may be the main fundraiser this year, the club encourages every one of its members, supporters and friends to get behind those who are dancing and support them in any way you can for the next few weeks.

Each dancer will be seeking sponsorship so do not wait to be asked for a donation, be up front but please do support them. Tickets will be available shortly for the final - watch this space!
