Gardai urge Christmas caution for both drivers and pedestrians

With the season for Christmas parties, nights out and gatherings in full swing, a garda sergeant in Fermoy is urging drivers and pedestrians to be cautious.

Speaking to The Avondhu, the sergeant said that with the evenings getting darker, there are more collisions and drivers should make sure that their vehicle's lights are working properly.

The Gardai are also running Operation Pedestrian at the moment and the RSA are giving out free high visibility jackets, which are available from Fermoy Garda Station. He said that the jackets are there to be collected, are free and that people should not be walking in dark clothes, without high visibility gear, even if they are in well lit up areas.

The sergeant also warned motorists to be mindful of the road conditions and to exercise caution accordingly, as the nights are getting frostier and there is a potential for ice.

Drivers are also reminded to be vigilant about driving the morning after they have been out. Most people will call a taxi to get them home safely on a night out because they are under the influence of alcohol, but they might still drive to work at 7am or 8am, just hours after they have stopped drinking, when they are still over the legal limit.

Gardai nationwide are currently carrying out random check points from 7am in the mornings.
