Gardai investigating fire in Glanworth

Gardai in Fermoy are investigating the cause of a raging blaze in Glanworth in the early hours of Tuesday morning last.

A spokesperson for Fermoy Fire Brigade told The Avondhu that they were on scene on the Mill Road in Glanworth at about 6.20am on Tuesday after a concerned citizen alerted them to a fire in the clothes donation bank, which had spread to the nearby bottle bank.

The firefighters used hundreds of gallons of water to flood out the banks, in order to quench the blaze and two units from Fermoy were on sight for about two hours to control the fire, as the materials were all highly flammable and were engulfed in flames by the time they arrived.

Firefighters said that items had been melted down to nothing and the heat from the clothes bank had also set some nearby hedging on fire. Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact Fermoy Garda Station on 025-82100.

Gardai also told The Avondhu that criminal damage had been caused to two cars, one in Kildorrery and one in Glanworth on the night before, and while only two were reported, it has been speculated that there was a spate of criminal damage to cars on the night. Gardai are urging anyone whose car was damaged to contact them, so that they can have a fuller picture of events from Monday, February 16 and leading into the early hours of February 17.

It is unknown whether or not there is a connection between the incidents of criminal damage and the fire in Glanworth.

Local sources in Glanworth told The Avondhu that there hasn't been any trouble in the village recently and that there hasn't been anything untoward or suspicious going on, so the incidents appear to have come out of the blue.
